Smart Doll dressed in Akiki Pattern dress

Review of “1/3 SDGR Black Butterfly” Doll Dress Pattern by AKIKI STUDIO

AKIKI STUDIO, which features exquisite doll clothing design patterns, has once again captivated me with its latest creation, the “1/3 SDGR Black Butterfly” pattern. This pattern, an actual work of art, comes with a complete step-by-step tutorial.

First Impressions

The “Black Butterfly” dress pattern immediately caught my eye because of its Victorian-inspired design. The intricate details, such as the black lace accents and the prominent black butterfly motif on the bodice, make it elegant and sophisticated. I substituted the lace for bias binding in a contrasting color for a more modern aesthetic. The pattern includes an overdress, stockings, and even a hat.

Pattern Instructions

The PDF download tutorial is full of pictures and is easy to follow. While the English translation may not always be exact, the comprehensive visual aids compensate for this, ensuring even a beginner sewist can confidently tackle this project.

I like downloadable patterns because I only print out the pattern pieces. If I have any questions, I can refer to my laptop. (saves paper and ink)

Fabric and Fit

One of the features that drew me to this pattern is its versatility, especially with the extra pieces included. I experimented with cotton fabrics and concluded that lighter-weight fabrics such as batiste or silk are better. The fit was perfect for a 1/3 Smart Doll.

I recommend lighter-weight fabric because of the layering and ruffling to reduce bulk at the neck and the waistband.

I finished the neck and sleeve ruffles with a machine Blanket stitch. The buttons are pearly beads.

Details and Embellishments

This pattern has detailed Victorian-style pieces. Each piece fits together perfectly.

My only disappointment is that the seam allowances aren’t included, which adds an extra step to the outfit.

My Experience

What sets the Black Butterfly pattern apart is its level of detail. The picture instructions provide all the instructions you’ll need. Although the pattern is labeled as “difficult,” I think it’s not difficult if you have some experience with your sewing machine and are comfortable with handling the tiny details. It’s more about precision and patience than it is about complexity.

I substituted the lace for contrasting fabric bands to give the outfit an updated look.

Creative Flexibility

You can modify the dress by making simple alterations to reflect your style. As I write this blog, I’m already brimming with new ideas!
