How to Draft a Circle Skirt Pattern

Circle skirts are remarkably simple to draft and sew for any size doll. With just two measurements of waist circumference and the desired length, you can quickly master this straightforward process. You’ll find it’s a breeze!

Supplies

  • Tape Measure
  • Pattern Paper
  • Ruler
  • Compass (or a piece of string and a pencil)
  • Paper Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Calculator

Measurements

  1. First, measure your doll’s waist circumference and decide on the length (L) of your skirt from the waist to the hem.
  2. Calculate the Radius
  3. To draft a circle skirt, you must find the circle’s radius to form the waistline. Use the formula for the circumference of a circle (C = 2πr) and rearrange it to solve for the radius (r = C / 2π). In this case, C is your waist measurement (W). Replace π with 3.14 in the formula. You can also use the calculator below.

Example: If the doll’s waist measurement is 10″. Therefore, the radius would be approx. 1.5″.
R = 10 / (2*3.14) or 10 / 6.28, or you can skip that and use the Omni Calculator.

Waist Radius: Using your compass or a piece of string tied to a pencil, draw a quarter-circle with the radius you calculated in the corner of your pattern paper to make the waistline.

Skirt Length Radius: From the waistline, measure and mark the desired length of your skirt (L) along several points, creating a larger quarter-circle. Connect these points to form the hemline.

Add seam Allowances

Add seam allowances to your pattern pieces. Typically, I add 1/4 inch for the waistline and hem and 1/4 inch for the side seams.

Waistband

Draw a rectangle the length of the waist measurement.

Add desired seam allowances, making sure to allow for an overlap in the closure.

Note: If you’re making a circle skirt without any seams, don’t add seam allowance to the sides or back.
